Interpreters are also carefully screened
and their qualifications are rigorously assessed in an initial
series of mandatory interviews prior to employment.
Legal, Medical and socio/psychological terminology is a regular
feature of the lexicon of our working interpreters, and they
are familiar with the standard procedures involved in tribunals
and medical offices. ALS makes sure that all interpreters
are briefed on any special procedures and terminology involved
in any particular setting and that they are aware of verbatim
or cultural interpretation requirements, etc. before finalizing
their assignments. They are regularly reminded of issues confidentiality,
etc. and, as dictated by training and experience, these interpreters
remain neutral at all times. Punctuality, proper dress and
professional conduct is a given.
Assignments are double confirmed with interpreters, special
briefing is provided to the interpreters and any incompatibility
issues are addressed. Upon receiving a request for interpretation,
the Coordinator will log in all the details and, based on
the information given, will proceed immediately to select
the best interpreter/candidate from the files, selecting first
from any one having previous specific experience in the same
or similar settings. An oral and faxed confirmation of the
name of the interpreter to appear for each assignment is provided
to the client. The ongoing status of the interpreter’s
assignment is carefully recorded and monitored throughout
the work period. The interpreter is instructed to always appear
about 15 minutes previous to the start of the session and
to call ALS upon completion of the assignment for daily feedback
and further processing of the completed job.
As a contingency plan, backup interpreters are available
at all times to stand in, in the rare event of illness or
unforeseen circumstances.
